The Dark Ages was a series of escalating conflicts between Creatures and Terrans on the planet Earth in the Nexus Universe. It was a two sided war, the Terran Creatures versus the Knights of the Iron Dagger and the Discordian Tyrant King Arthur. By Halloween of 906 CE, Creatures have completely abandoned the Mortal realm in favor of the Creature World which they took control of.
The Dark Ages are based on the event of the same name mentioned in the Halloweentown Disney Channel Original Movies
Background
Monsters on Earth
Although the Nexus Universe lacked the vast amount of Magic the future Prime Universe, it still had enough to form magical creatures on both the Earth and in the Halloweentown dimension. On Earth, Creatures evolves along side Humans and the two lived together for thousands of years.
Arthur's Rise to Power
In the Nexan Magic Dimension, the Humanoid Creatures there quickly developed into a primitive society similar to Humans on Earth. Numerous tribes of different races popped up around the planet, predominantly on a small island. Eventually, one man rose up, united all of the tribes together, and named himself king. King Arthur was at first a benevolent ruler, but his power and status quickly went to his head. He became a tyrant, ruling over the Humanoid Creatures with an iron fist,
All Hallows Eve
As the ancient feast known as All Hallows Eve evolved into the holiday known as Halloween, Humans began to dress up as monsters and mocked the actual creatures. Angered, the creatures, led by Merlin, began to devise a plan to get their revenge on them.

The Creature Spell
Merlin, the head of the Cromwell Witch Clan, created the Creature Spell, a spell designed to transform humans in costume into the very entity they portrayed. That All Hallows Eve, the spell was cast on a small town, transforming the humans into monstrous creatures that began to attack each other and other humans from surrounding towns. Major devastation and deaths were brought to humanity until the sun rose the following morning.
Rise of the Iron Nights
The humans were not happy about what the creatures did. To prevent something like this from happening a second time, numerous strong willed Magic haters banned together and formed the Knights of the Iron Dagger. Who were trained and prepared to fight against the creatures with iron weapons and amour, iron being one of the few things many creatures are severely weak to.
The next Halloween, when the creatures were ready to cast the Creature Spell once again, they were ambushed by the knights and a battle ensued. The many Knights quickly overwhelmed and murdered several of the spell casters and quickly spread outwards to attack other magical creatures in the hopes of wiping out all Magic. The creatures had no choice but to use their Magic to destroy nearly all of the knights while the rest made a tactical retreat.
The Big Move
Using their Magic in such a way, murdering the knights and other humans, made the creatures fear that they were turning evil. To prevent further corruption, Merlin and the Cromwells devised a plan to move the magical population to another realm, free of the humans. They discovered and developed a portal to another dimension and used it to evacuate all of creature kind from Earth.

Aftermath
Creatures Being Forgotten
Over the many centuries, the disappearance of the Magical Community made the human population start to forget about them. Humans directly involved in the war eventually all died out, only their descendants knew of magical creatures until they too eventually forgot. Come the turn of the Twentieth Century, humanity have completely forgot about the creatures that once plagued their world, likening them to myths and folklore.
Creating The Grey Spell
Eventually, Merlin thought to create a counter spell to the Creature Spell. A spell designed to transform creatures into humans. However, there was a flaw in the spell. The Creature Reversal Spell did not change creatures into humans, they transformed them into characters of humans, they way creatures see humans. The spell also sapped away all magic and color from those affected by it. Now called the Grey Spell, the spell was marked as a curse and banned from ever being cast again. The Grey Spell was so dangerous, that Merlin made it illegal to create new spells, officially listing it in the Code of Merlin.
Human and Creature World's United
On October 31st, 2004, an evil Warlock attempted to close the portal between the human and creature worlds forever. However the separation between the worlds was not strong enough to prevent communication between them. Witches Glasses and other magical artifacts essentially made the two realms connected regardless. Thanks to creatures living on earth disguised as humans and becoming friends with them, so much so that humans were okay with the monster behind their masks, the portal was forced open, permanently linking the two worlds.
